The way we are

I’m at that first crucial juncture in my life where I have to decide whether or not I want to accept what’s coming with any sort of grace and dignity. There’s no getting around it folks, as sure as the rising sun, in two years I’ll be hitting the big 3-0.

The “dirty thirties.”

The beginning of the proverbial hill, if you will.

Here’s the thing: I can either a] ignore the fact that I’m turning 30 and pretend I’m turning 29 again and again in a weird Groundhog’s Day-esque move that still yells desperation, b] I can accept it begrudgingly while wistfully wishing for the allure and fun of my early-twenties or c] I can grab it and welcome my 30th year of living with a bang. I’m leaning towards the option c. It’s a birthday. Isn’t that reason enough to celebrate? Some people don’t even have birthdays to celebrate. Besides, if I celebrate, it means I get cake.

Oh the things I’ll do for cake.

I’ve had a series of conversations with friends pretty much discussing how old we’re getting. Granted, we’re only turning 28 this year but the grumbles have begun. Our ten-year high school reunion is upon us [has it really be 10 years?!], we’ve got jobs and responsibilities and some of us are married and have kids. We go on vacations without our parents. We’re grown-ups now; real deal grown-ups.

We can eat cupcakes for breakfast [which I did just this morning…yum]. And you know what? They are even more delicious at that hour.
