With a heart full of thanks
While I try to remember to be thankful every day, I do appreciate the sentiment behind Thanksgiving, taking the moment to think about all you have to be grateful for over the past year. I think this is a good thing for everyone to do, especially when times aren’t exactly the best. It’s easy to become hyper focused on what we’re lacking and completely miss all the great things we do have. So here’s my list for 2011.
This year, I’m grateful for:
1. My family
My family has been a great support for me this year. I love them and they get on my nerves sometimes but still, they’re my family. They truly understand and love me no matter how obnoxious I may get on occasion. My mom has especially gone beyond the call of duty, letting me stay with her and helping me out while I’ve been between jobs. She’s been a great friend and adviser to me and definitely a source of good times.
2. My health
Schmidty notwithstanding, I have been in good health. I managed to avoid getting the flu so far this year (though last year’s bout was a fluke, seeing how physically and mentally exhausted I was by the time we moved into the new house) and I have been doing an okay job at managing my weight. I’ve increased my mileage and ran a couple 5k races this year and a 10k. I’m so glad I’ve been able to be physically able to accomplish these feats.
3. My new job
I haven’t gotten my job yet but it’s coming! I’m just speaking in faith. I’m glad to finally be done relying on unemployment “benefits” and am looking forward to paying back into the system. But mostly, I’m eager and excited about utilizing my MBA and finally working in a marketing capacity as I’ve always wanted to do. It’s awesome to finally be earning a regular paycheck and have somewhere to go every day. I’m looking forward to my new job challenges and growing into a new position and career and meeting all my new coworkers. I’m back, baby!
4. My bf
This man has continued to be amazing. I know I’ve gotten under his skin on one issue or another and vice versa, his love for me and dedication to our relationship trumps everything. He’s been very demonstrative with his love by putting together thoughtful activities and care packages, taking the time to talk to me about everything, even those not so pleasant conversations, and most importantly, he’s been willing to listen when I’ve mentioned things he’s done that I don’t like or have hurt my feelings and he’s not only apologized and acknowledged that he was wrong, but he’s made the necessary changes to address the issues I’ve brought up. I haven’t seen this behavior modeled before and it is simply mind blowing to me. I love him for that.
5. My personal relationship with God
While I don’t always talk about my religious preference in much but I have been really moving into a new level with my relationship this year. While I’ve been out of work, I’ve used the time to really step up my focus on managing my Sunday School class (I’m the lead teacher) and we’re making some great new moves, including creating new lesson from scratch on teaching the books of the Bible that I’m really excited to finish and implement. I’m growing leaps and bounds from where I was this time last year and have been gaining new understanding left and right. I’m amazed at all there is to this relationship and how great God is. I really feel free.
6. Health Insurance
This one goes without saying, but my goodness am I so happy I was able to find somewhat affordable health insurance once my COBRA benefit had expired. This has simply been my best purchase this year. I don’t even want to think about how much I would have been paying without it trying to deal with stupid Schmidty and even though I am responsible for my deductible, which isn’t the lowest thing possible, I’m glad it’ll only be a portion of the total bill!
I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday filled with love, laughter and lots and lots of food!
